Nandini Majumdar

Nandini Majumdar, an alumni of the University of California, is presently a research scholar at the University of Oxford and has been associated with NIRMAN (www.nirman.info), a non-profit organization based in Banaras that works for education, arts, and international exchange. Started by her father, Dr Som Majumdar, a well-known economist and musician, in 1988, Nandini has actively been a part of the organization since 2004 and doing research on the city’s history and working with the artisans since then. Daughter of Nita Kumar, author of one of the seminal works on Banaras, The Artisans of Banaras: Popular Culture and Identity (published by Oxford University Press, 1988), who presently holds the Brown Family Chair of South Asian History at Claremont McKenna College, California, Nandini in this first book on her favourite city, Banaras: Walks through India’s Sacred City explores the history of the culture and the city itself. Well-researched with emphasis on every little detail about the city, the book is put together with an aim to reintroduce Banaras to the world. From art and craft to speciality street food, and from religious confluence to the typical Banarasi pan, Nandini takes readers on twelve extensive walks through one of India’s holiest cities.
