Drinking is one of the most basic human needs. However, the act of drinking encompasses much more than just quenching one’s thirst. It is also an important cultural act, that differs broadly in the beverages and their preparation and consumption around the world. This publication describes some of the most charactaristic beverages and their ceremonies. The authors from different fields of expertise clearly explain the different ways these drinks are prepared, shared, and consumed, and their inherent social power ranging from Palm Wine in the Tropical Belt via Rice Beer in Northeast India to the Alpine Milk Culture in Switzerland. Furthermore, two sommeliers contribute brief descriptions of the beverages which Western palates are not accustomed to – an invitation to the readers to enjoy this book with all their senses.
