The second volume of the monograph on the work of Josef Paul Kleihues (1933–2004) encompasses the most active years (1981 to 1995) of this prominent postwar German architect. From 1979 to 1987 Kleihues was the head of the International Building Exhibition in Berlin, and after German reunification he was undoubtedly the most influential architect in the capital. Buildings deserving special mention include the Regent Hotel (which until 2004 was the Four Seasons) at the Gendarmenmarkt and his tower, the Kantdreieck, with its characteristic “shark fin” on the roof. Kleihues received international recognition for his museum buildings in particular, such as the redesigned Deichtorhalle, the Hamburger Bahnhof, and the new building of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. His central concept of “critical reconstruction” influenced an entire generation of architects. (German edition ISBN 978-3-7757-3616-9)
