Artillery’s Thunder: The Untold Kargil Story offers a rare, frontline perspective of the 1999 Kargil War, seen through the eyes of an Artillery Commander. In this gripping account, Maj Gen Lakhwinder Singh recounts how India’s mighty Bofors FH-77B howitzers turned the tide of Operation Vijay. With over 290,000 shells fired, the guns decimated enemy positions and helped reclaim strategic peaks like Tololing and Tiger Hill. From the political dynamics to the military leadership’s initial state of confusion, and then the studied, well-planned actions – it is a clarion call to jolt us out of slumber and create a viable and visible strategic deterrence.

This book not only celebrates the precision, power, and coordination of Indian artillery, infantry, and air force, but also reminds that the echoes of Kargil are far from silent. The 2025 Pahalgam attack and India’s fierce retaliation in Operation Sindoor reveal that peace along the Line of Control (LoC) remains fragile.

A powerful blend of battlefield heroism and present-day urgency, this is a tribute to the men who fought at the world’s highest battlefield.

Maj Gen Lakhwinder Singh is a third-generation army officer and joined the National Defence Academy in 1964. He was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery in December 1967. When a Captain in 42 Field Regiment, he fought the India-Pakistan war of 1971 in Dera Baba Nanak sector on the Western Front. For his gallantry in the war, he was recommended for the Vir Chakra.

As Commander of 8 Mountain Artillery Brigade during the Kargil War, his innovative use of 155 mm Bofors guns in direct firing role and plan of incorporating 100 such guns on the objective turned out to be a game changer. He earned the name ‘Enraged Bull of Dras’ for his technique of applying overwhelming firepower on the enemy. For his sterling contribution to our victory in Kargil, he was awarded the Yudh Seva Medal.

Post retirement, he is currently leading the life of a successful entrepreneur, playing golf and reading.
