Paresh Maity: Luminous Terrains
Kishore Singh
Paresh Maity has long been an artist whose work resists easy categorisation. While he is deeply rooted in drawing and observation, his practice is equally shaped by movement
across places, cultures, and states of mind. over the years, travel has become for him not merely a source of subject matter, but a way of thinking, seeing, and responding to
the world. Luminous Terrains emerges from this sustained engagement with place as experience rather than destination.
This book and the accompanying exhibition bring together landscapes created over time, inspired by journeys through India and beyond. From the spiritual density of the Mahakumbh and the timeless cadence of Varanasi, to the stark poetry of Rajasthan and the fragile serenity of Kashmir, from the quiet sanctity of Maihar to the shifting reflections of Venice and the radiant light of the South of France, each location leaves its trace. Yet none is rendered literally. Instead, Paresh translates what he absorbs, light, movement, colour, and silence, into a visual language that is instinctive and unmistakably his own.
