1 Rajput (4 Guards) was raised on 15th September 1798 at Sasaram, Bihar. In its illustrious history of 226 years, this battalion has taken part in the Maratha, Sikh, and Anglo-Nepal wars and in World Wars I and II with distinction. During its storied history, the Battalion has won 22 Battle Honours and 2 Theatre honours in battles across Asia, Europe, and Africa. The exceptional bravery of this battalion in the battles of Bharatpur, in 1825–26 has been written about by the eminent historian Philip Mason in his book A Matter of Honour and by Maj Gen Ian Cardozo in his book Beyond Fear.

In the Indo-Pak War of 1947–48, the Battalion played a decisive role in the battles of Naushera and Jhangar. Its valiant defence of the Taindhar feature earned for Naik Jadunath Singh the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest award for courage in war.

This is his story of grit and determination in the face of adversity. Encouraging his men to fight, he set an example of coolness and courage. Naik Jadunath Singh’s story and performance in the war is a source of inspiration for many others.
