The capture of Phillaura and Chawinda were part of the plan of India’s 1 Corps. Phillaura was contacted on 11 September. After a fierce fight the enemy withdrew from Phillaura, which was finally captured on 13 September. From 14 September onwards several attacks were launched for the capture of Chawinda but were met with fierce resistance. Poona Horse played a key role in these battles, and Lieutenant Colonel Tarapore distinguished himself in a command of the regiment but was fatally wounded and succumbed to his injuries. For his outstanding courage and leadership, he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest award for courage on the battlefield.

The ceasefire was declared before Chawinda could be captured. Overall, Pakistan lost 60 tanks in the Sialkot Sector.
