As part of the centenary year celebrations of its founder, Ramnath Goenka, the Express Group instituted the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards in 2006. Now, in its third year, the annual awards celebrate excellence in journalism, recognise courage and commitment, and highlight outstanding contributions by journalists. The Prize Stories is a compilation of the award-winning articles accompanied by personal testimonials. Among the 2007-2008 winners are P Sainath, Karan Thapar, Neelesh Misra, Nagendar Sharma, Nidhi Razdan, Sreenivasan Jain, Sandeep Dwivedi, Mridu Bhandari and Vaishali Sood. The Excellence in Journalism Awards honour journalists from both print and broadcast media who worked, often under difficult circumstances, to bring these thought-provoking stories. In this edition the stories focus on a variety of issues which include: The Salwa Judum 'People's Movement', The rape by police of tribal women blamed for helping Naxalites, Farmer suicides in Vidharbha, Scarcity of water in Bundelkhand, The impact of mercury on health, Unwarranted hysterectomies of young girls in Andhra Pradesh, The media business, and The rise of Corporatised politics. This is a collection of the award-winning entries along with personal anecdotes by the winners, an initiative by The Express Group celebrating 'courage, enterprise and fairness'.
